BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — A strong and shallow undersea earthquake shook part of Indonesia’s Aceh province Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.9 earthquake was centered 362 kilometers (225 miles) east of Sinabang, a coastal town in Aceh province at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks. The agency put a preliminary magnitude at 6.3. (AP) — Since passage of the Endangered Species Act 50 years ago, more than 1,700 plants, mammals, fish, insects and other species in the U.S. have been listed as threatened or endangered with extinction. Yet federal government data reveals striking disparities in how much money is allocated to save various biological kingdoms.Of the roughly $1.2 billion a year spent on endangered and threatened species, about half goes toward recovery of just two types of fish: salmon and steelhead trout along the West Coast. A cyclist in Ventura County, California says he feels fortunate to have escaped with only minor injuries after a massive, rogue wave crashed ashore Thursday.The wave struck as onlookers had gathered at Pierpont Beach in the city of Ventura to watch the high surf caused by a large offshore storm system.  Video recorded by Colin Hoag shows people first casually watching as the wave breaks and barrels toward a short brick wall at the dead-end of Seward Avenue. Passenger train fatally strikes person on tracks in Menlo Park

MENLO PARK — A fatal accident in Menlo Park involving a passenger train temporarily disrupted Caltrain service on the Peninsula.A northbound Caltrain fatally struck a person Friday night, the rail service said.“At approximately 6:22 p.m., northbound train #711 fatally struck a person near the Menlo Park Station,” Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman said.An estimated 31 people were on board the Caltrain at the time of the fatal incident, according to Lieberman.None of the passengers were injured as a result of the fatal collision.The individual who was killed after being struck by the train hasn’t been identified.An investigation was underway regarding the fatal incident.“Trains are still single-tracking through the area” as of approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday night, Lieberman said. He added, “That should have minimal impact on service going forward.”
